20 Most Embarrassing Video Game Moments Since 2000
3. "John Romero's About To Make You His Bitch".
John Romero is one of the most well-known video game designers in history. He brought about some of the most famous franchises in history in the likes of Wolfenstein, Quake and Doom. He's strongly considered the father of the FPS genre, and he's also responsible for one of the biggest flops in video game history.
First announced in 1997, Daikatana was supposed to be the next big thing, and the hype surrounding it was unlike anything in the industry before it. Romero had a celebrity aura at the time in the game industry, and some believed he could do no wrong. However, Daikatana would go through multiple stages of development hell that would ultimately prove that theory wrong.
First, was the now infamous "John Romero's About to Make You His Bitch" ad that Romero reluctantly agreed to run with. The game would receive nothing but bad press from the ad, and it would become a punchline when talked about.
Then there were the development issues. As previously said, this game was announced in 1997, but wouldn't be released until 2000 thanks to multiple delays. Delays stemmed from abandoning the engine for the new Quake II engine, which took longer than expected.
Finally, various problems emerged in-house at Ion Storm, the studio behind everything. It had a revolving door when it came to staff, with most of the original development team quitting to form their own team. Not to mention the budget was ever shrinking, no doubt because of Ion Storm's decision to have a multi-million dollar office on the top floor of a Dallas skyscraper.
The immense amount of hype, the in-house problems and the game's ultimate inability to deliver make Daikatana one of the most embarrassing disasters in gaming history.
