20 Most Intense Video Game Moments Of The Decade
17. Batman: Arkham City - Joker’s Death
The Batman: Arkham series leaves a hell of a legacy from this decade. Its fast flowing combat has been aped by so many other action adventure games this genre, and is yet to really be improved upon.
It has some fantastic boss fights and great narrative moments, even if an overuse of Joker wasn’t to everyone’s tastes. Brilliant depictions of Scarecrow, Mr Freeze, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill’s fantastic voice work as Batman and Joker and possibly the best version of Harley Quinn ever makes the Arkham series a legendary part of the overall Batman canon.
Across the whole series though, there’s one massive standout. Joker’s death comes completely out of nowhere, and seem far beyond the boundaries of what the rules of comic book stories usually follow. You don’t kill off the big bad in the middle!
With Arkham City though, that’s exactly what Rocksteady did.
There’s the initial moment of intensity when it happens, and you can’t quite believe that’s really the end. This is followed by a much quieter, somber moment, as Batman carries his old foe out into the streets and presents him to Harley.
Gritty, hard hitting and gothic, like all the best Batman stories are.
