20 Most Intense Video Game Moments Of The Decade
13. Cuphead - King Dice
The whole of Cuphead was pretty intense, with the game one long boss rush with a few hard as nails run and gun levels sprinkled in there. While the final boss was the Devil himself, his second in command King Dice served up a much more intense experience.
This is down to the nature of the battle. The Devil, like other difficult bosses Grim Matchstick, Cala Maria and Dr Khal’s Robot, is incredibly tricky but at least follows a set pattern. King Dice, suitably, leaves his patterns down to luck.
To even start fighting him, you need to beat an array of mini bosses, and whoever you get is down to where you land on the board. Worse, there’s a start over square which can send you right back to the beginning.
There’s obviously intensity baked into the chance element, but even away from that, the game is asking so much of you. Other bosses require you to remember between two and five stages to beat them, and the more stages the shorter they usually are. King Dice needs you to know ten distinct attack patterns before you even get a shot at him.
