There really was no question about what was going to be at the top. Sure, if we did this list before 2016, there would be some debate as to where this weapon goes, but Doom 2016 cemented the placement of the BFG 9000 at the top of the list of greatest and most powerful video game weapons.

The reason is very simple. Beyond the iconic nature of the weapon, and the sheer power let out by each shot, any weaknesses it does have are swiftly negated by the pros. It doesn't have that much ammo, sure, but you will NEVER need more than the shots it does give you. Everything in the path and radius of this beast of a gun are reduced to chunky salsa immediately.

It isn't that accurate, but we're not talking about a sniper rifle here. And besides that, the blasts from this thing have little bolts of lighting that arc off and hit anything anywhere close to it. And any bosses that you hit with it, provided you don't shoot off in the opposite direction from where they're standing, might as well give up the minute they get hit.

We could argue all day, but choosing anything other than the BFG would just feel needlessly contrarian.

The BFG 9000 is the most powerful video game weapon ever.
