8. GTA: San Andreas (2004) - Experimenting In Local Co-op Mode

For the most part, the GTA series has progressed well enough that San Andreas is a game best left to memory. But one understated aspect of the game that's worth revisiting is the well-concealed local co-op mode. The first time I realised that this existed was nothing short of magic. Taking turns on San Andreas with a buddy, I was traipsing around some hillbilly backwater (wiping out the town's populace, which I decided was part of a local KKK sect) when I happened upon the multiplayer icon. I went over, pressed X, and still remember my friend and I looking at each other in disbelief as he tentatively picked up the second controller, then gasped as he discovered that he was now in the game with me. Crude though it may be, playing local co-op GTA is an ultimate gaming fantasy. It's still a blast too, as you can carry out endless experiments with the game mechanics. Driving a pickup truck with your buddy standing in the back and wreaking carnage is a define 'yes', while trying to fly a jet with your buddy on the wing is a bit more of a challenge.
