4. Saints Row: The Third

GTA lost something when Rockstar tried to inject a more serious tone into part four, and although GTA V did try to return to the 'whacky' nature of old, it just didn't have the same sense of charm the middle couple of Saints Row games showed off in abundance. Whilst the fourth SR would add superpowers and Gat Out of Hell was simply way too much of a glorified DLC pack, it's this third entry that always had some of the best comedic writing ever seen. No matter if you play as a big-boobed woman, balloon-armed man or... cockney alien in a sombrero, you can tell creators Volition just wanted to make the most fun and OTT game possible. As such, the basic feel of gameplay i.e. shooting and driving, is a perfect blend of arcade immediacy and long-term mastery. Once you've spent a few hours in Saints 3's company, you'll be rattling through missions, laughing as you go, before taking a break to hop in a jet on the way to upgrade your guns and get a whole new outfit, just to do it all again for another hundred hours.
