For a time the world just couldn't get enough of Epic Games' revolutionary stop n' pop cover system - to the point where developers that should've been steering clear ended up crowbarring it into their own games, destroying everything from Mass Effect to Dead Space in the process. When it's being handled by the masters themselves though, there's nothing better. By the time the third Gears rolled around, Epic knew exactly what needed to be done for another hit, ramping up the gore factor, including a bevy of new Fatality-style execution moves, and even tugging at the heartstrings for a particular character's final farewell. Gears of War is set to return in 2016 in the next numbered instalment, as it's about time we got back to chainsawing a few thousand alien chests in half every few minutes.
