20 Most Underrated Video Games Of The Generation (So Far)

10. Outlast

Outlast Game
Red Barrels

Although the Outlast series is slowly gaining more recognition as a modern horror masterpiece the longer time goes on, the original game released without any hype surrounding it back in 2013.

Adopting the same run-and-hide gameplay mechanics of countless indie horror titles on Steam, the game could have easily just been another run-of-the-mill cash-in on an increasingly popular genre.

But Outlast brought a surprising amount of variety and polish to the expected genre proceedings. Instead of being able to quickly identify how the game's scares were put together and having the suspense ruined through shoddy game design, the original title remained genuinely surprising for its entire run-time.

Rarely ever reusing scenarios or scares more than once, despite not having access to the same resources of a big triple A release, Outlast still felt like one. A lean and mean monster even four years down the line, the original instalment in the franchise is still one of the most impressive horror games of this generation.
