5. XCOM 2

A sequel to 2012's sleeper-hit revival of the cult-classic series, XCOM 2 spent years perfecting the already fantastic turn-based tactical gameplay of its predecessor.

In charge of a resistance force pushing back an overwhelming alien threat, the sequel gave players the option of waging guerrilla warfare and full-on assaults on the enemy in its solid single-player campaign.

Boasting a much faster and more tactical hit-and-run style of gameplay than the original release, XCOM 2 still retained the depth and complexity that made that game such a cult hit in the first place.

Likewise, an approach to making the maps partly procedurally generated meant that players were constantly kept on their toes, never able to rely on the same tactics twice to get them through ever-changing levels and online bouts.

The niche appeal of turn-based tactics games meant that the title didn't blow up the mainstream as much as it should have, but it's provided countless hours of entertainment for the people who gave it a chance.
