Although Doom was praised for ushering in a grand return to the style of old-school first-person shooters back in 2016, Wolfenstein: The New Order had already accomplished the very same thing years prior.

Throwing out many of the restrictions that modern FPS games were known for such as regenerating health, a two-weapon carry limit and linear corridor shooting, The New Order proved that the old way of doing things was still alive and kicking.

But it wasn't just impressive because it marked a return to classic game design principles that were thought to have been long abandoned, as Wolfenstein had a surprisingly great story backing it up too.

The series has never been known for the quality of its storytelling, but the latest release managed to turn what had previously just been an excuse to shoot supernatural Nazis in the face into a compelling alternate-future tragedy.
