Although some fans of the Resident Evil franchise were turned off by the radical new direction of the seventh game, they need to look no further for a worthy successor to the series than The Evil Within.

Spearheaded by the same director as the best Resi games, Tango Gameworks' take on survival horror refined the intense third-person shooting the genre was known for while ramping up the gore and focusing on psychological elements that gave the title an added surreal edge.

There were a few technical problems that held the title back when it first launched, and the decision to adopt a letterboxd screen didn't sit well with some players, but in the intervening years patches have sorted out most of the complaints that marred the title back in 2014.

The Evil Within 2 is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of the year, so there's never been a better time to go back and appreciate one of the best survival horror games of the generation so far.
