The Image: A city completely ravaged by a nuclear blast: everything in its path has been destroyed, including the player. Why It's Powerful: We as gamers had simply never seen anything quite like this before. The mission, Aftermath, picks up after a nuclear warhead has been detonated while Sgt. Paul Jackson and his squad attempted to escape the blast in a helicopter. Unfortunately, the chopper crashes, Jackson climbs out to see his dead teammates, and then, while the player is controlling him, Jackson himself dies from a combination of his injuries and the heavy radiation. Again, this is a rare moment in a war-based video game that surrenders the haunting, destructive power of combat. While most of the deaths in the series involve the player flippantly mowing down as many bad guys as possible, this horrifying scene lingered on the after-effects of a nuclear blast, and forced players to helplessly look on as one of their protagonists expired.
