15. Axiom Verge
Right, onto the good stuff. Developed by one man coding powerhouse, Thomas Happ, he promptly recognised there hadn't been a truly brilliant Super Metroid-style game since Shadow Complex, and set about remedying that immediately.
Playing as scientist-turned-inter-dimensional explorer Trace, you wield the titular weapon and explore your surroundings in a 2D side-scrolling shooter. The world unfolds around you and Trace discovers that he's the linchpin in a war of two entities, the game injecting enough humour into proceedings to always prompt you to keep going.
Upgrades in both weapons and character abilities come thick and fast, and in terms of being a retro throwback, even the corner map and intentionally glitchy level tiles are laser-focussed nods to the cartridge-loading days of the 90s.
Don't be put off by its primitive aesthetic, Axiom Verge is one hell of a fun ride.
