20 Severely Underrated PS1 Games You Totally Missed

6. Monkey Hero

https://youtu.be/AeuCxJ0BoaM Monkey Hero is a pretty good example of a game that was panned by critics (and even consumers) undeservedly. Some complained that it was too hard for children, while the gaming press cried about €œsub-par€ graphics. It was even referred to as a Legend of Zelda knock-off. However, every gamer simply has to ask; is there anything wrong with being like LoZ? Honestly, it does play quite a bit like classic Zelda games. You have health represented by a number of peaches (similar to the hearts from Zelda), and traverse a series of dungeons in a top-down view while fighting enemies and solving puzzles. The story focuses on the character of Monkey, who has to defeat the Nightmare King and retrieve pieces of a Magic Story book. Pretty simple stuff, but it€™s fun enough - the main charm being precisely this aping of timeless Zelda-style gameplay. The sad thing about the 32-bit era is that quite a few great games were often overlooked because they were B grade games being compared to the emerging AAA blockbusters. It may be valid to deride a game for being a knock-off, but one has to ask: have you ever played a great game, finished it, and said €œYeah... no more for me thanks"? Exactly. For PlayStation owners who didn€™t have access to a Zelda game (or never played one), it was a fresh and enjoyable experience. Likewise, it€™s still a strong enough title to revisit. No PS store release is available at the time, but it is available for a pittance used.
