20 Severely Underrated PS1 Games You Totally Missed

17. Brave Fencer Musashi

https://youtu.be/L8N_-WCcbdk The story takes place in the Allucaneet Kingdom that was saved 150 years ago by the hero Musashi, now reincarnated as a kid. The princess of the kingdom brings Musashi to help fend off the invading forces of the Thirstquencher Empire. Brave Fencer Musashi was one of Squaresoft€™s (now Square-Enix) attempts at something outside of the normal turn-based RPG they're now so famous for. In Brave Fencer Musashi, you typically go on story based missions in various dungeons and maps that are located around the kingdom where you spend a good amount of time. Monsters are wondering around each €œroom€ and you can either ignore them or kill them. Slaying the minor monsters yields money, and you can even €œassimilate" the powers of the different monsters, many times letting you access areas beyond your reach. Musashi has a RPG style HP bar and a €œBP€ bar which allows to use that assimilated powers. When you return to the town, you can buy items and talk to the towns people, or go to the castle and interact with the denizens who live there. One of the most interesting thing about BFM was how the game transitioned from day to night in real time, requiring you to carefully plan out your journeys as Musashi would grow tired after a certain amount of time. Likewise, the food you carried to heal Musashi would also age in real-time. After a few days of in-game time, the items would go rancid and make Musashi sick. In short, BFM is very different than a typical action RPG. It€™s available now on PS Store, while a physical copy can be acquired for around $30.
