20 Severely Underrated Video Games From The 2000s

7. The Darkness

The Darkness utilized an awesome fusion of flashy gun-kata gameplay and horror-style theatrics to tell the story of Jackie Estacado, mafia hit-man and the latest in a long line of hosts to wield the titular Darkness; a demonic force which imbues the bearer with supernatural powers. Powers which include the ability to summon tentacles from the darkest recesses of the room to tear enemies limb from limb, slither across walls and ceilings, and even rip out hearts to reach those all-important protein levels. Rip. Out. Hearts. That description is entirely literal, so you can imagine the sort of crazy stuff you'd get up to in a game like this. But of course The Darkness wouldn't be anything to write home about if buckets of blood was the only thing going for it (as fun as that can be), and as far as the narrative is concerned - Starbreeze Studios weaved a surprisingly touching story about Jackie Estacado's quest for revenge against his former mafia employers. Sure, The Darkness might not have been quite as polished as the stellar Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, but it's still a rollicking good time.
