Remember that scene where Vegeta keeps increasing the gravitational pull around him, all so that by the time he comes up against an enemy, he'll wipe the floor with them? Every time you've ever been bested by a brick wall of a boss - in an RPG especially - it's exactly that feeling of entering a gym-like mindset to thwart them later down the line. Moving away from what's affronting you and really putting the time in to surmount such an obstacle is a generalised way of describing something (or some one) you've probably already narrowed down in your head.
