20 Things We Learned From Gamescom 2016

17. Star Citizen Aims To Succeed Where No Man's Sky Fell Down

If there's one thing that No Man's Sky taught all of us upon its release, it's that buying into the hype 100% will only lead to disappointment. So many features and game mechanics were either alluded to or outright lied about in the run-up to launch, that it's robbed NMS of filling the 'open-galaxy exploration' slot wholeheartedly.

Enter Star Citizen, a near-mythical game that started life as a Kickstarter - only to raise over $119 MILLION in backing, thereby making it the most funded project in not only gaming history, but Kickstarter overall. Such a budget certainly eclipses No Man's Sky, and at Gamescom we finally got to see what developers Cloud Imperium have been working on.

As you can expect, having so much money to hand means environments are expansive and hand-crafted, character models detailed and space itself is a wondrously inviting, yet perilous proposition.

Being this is Cloud Imperium's first game, you should be a little apprehensive - and the fact that if you don't have a top of the range PC, means you can kiss playing it goodbye - but what the team are putting together already looks mighty impressive in every respect.
