Despite revolutionising 3D fighting games, there hasn't been a new Virtua Fighter since 2005. To be fair, it's hard to blame Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio for giving the franchise a backseat, since Like A Dragon has been the company's cash-cow for years.

Luckily, the creators have listened to the fanbase and have agreed to bring the fighting extravaganza back into the fold. Rather than following the same set-up with better graphics, the unnamed Virtua Fighter project introduces a new system called Break & Rush

This mechanic allows fighters to find openings in battle if they repeatedly hit specific body parts, allowing for bonus attacks. This simple idea makes each confrontation feel like a real brawl, since you're not wailing on your enemy generically but targeting weak-points. While other fighting IPs focus on ultra specials and ridiculous combos, this Virtua Fighter is keeping things simple by not implementing complex combat systems.

Lead developer, Masayoshi Yokoyama, insists the new Virtua Fighter will be the most innovative fighting game around, to the point where he'll abandon development if it isn't up to standard. That may be a tall order, but it demonstrates how much fate he has in Virtua Fighter's future.
