17. All The Franchise References

One of the burning questions ahead of RE7's release regarded whether it would actively nod to earlier games in the franchise or not, and while they're kept fairly subtle, the game absolutely includes implicit references to earlier games.

The player can find a 2014 newspaper article referring to the "nightmare of Raccoon City", meaning the 1998 events of the first three games, and also works written by franchise characters Clive R. O’Brian and Alyssa Ashcroft can be found scattered around.

Finally, you can also find a painting of the Arklay Mountains, where the first game was set, dated July 1991, some seven years before the first game's events took place.

While one could certainly argue that these references did little to recontextualise the story, they helped keep the player on edge in the game's final stretch, unsure of quite what direction it would go in with regard to previous entries.
