17. Assassin's Creed: Syndicate
Speaking of final instalments, could Syndicate mark an endpoint for the AC franchise? Probably not as the series has had naff instalments in the past, but it's definitely worth pointing out 2014's Unity marked the first time the audience en masse were thoroughly disappointed and turned away by the final product. Unity was a buggy, unplayable mess at times - something that did a huge disservice to the incredibly talented guys at Ubisoft, as in spots the visuals were absolutely staggering. When it came to the execution and any "next gen" features the only worthwhile inclusion was a button dedicated to descending from any high point; something almost nobody was having trouble with in the first place. So, as petitions and forum chatter boiled over to fever-pitch and fans unanimously said "Listen, how about you take your time with this one?!" Ubisoft's overlapping development schedules had to say "Nope!" and proceed to show off this year's instalment, Syndicate, anyway. 2015's Assassin's Creed is a unique beast because of all of this; it has quite the large mountain to climb, but comes from a lineage of initially spectacular games - so there's always hope Ubi and their respective teams can pull something special out the bag. Will that be the case next week? We'll have to wait and see.
