6. Silent Hill

Step aside Resident Evil, there's a new survival horror king on the block!

With its creepy monsters, sinister, crackling radio and disturbing tendencies to suddenly warp you into an alternate, slightly effed up reality, Silent Hill was simply one of the most terrifying games ever created. Everything about it is designed to mess with your head; hell, even the roiling fog of the town (which is simply a limitation of the PlayStation's hardware) even added to the horror aesthetic.

Admittedly it can be a bit clunky nowadays with its focus on random, nonsensical puzzles, but Silent Hill is still one of those games you simply should play. Just try not to wince every time protagonist Harry Mason speaks, delivering his lines in monotone fashion and constantly asking everybody if they've seen his daughter, Cheryl.
