17. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night

It's a game so awesome, it's basically gave birth to a genre.

Ever heard of Metroidvania? You can thank Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid for inventing the term.

If you've never heard of it, Metroidvania games are basically games where you explore one vast, interconnected world; as you go along, you'll get new abilities and powerups which will allow you to see more of the world, opening up areas you may have passed much, much earlier.

Unlike many other 2D sidescrollers of the time, Symphony of the Night has a lot of depth. With its sprawling world, rewarding upgrade mechanics (it's very like an RPG in some ways) plus the ability to gradually transform into different creatures, it's not hard to see why this one is very much considered one of the best games ever made.
