13. The Evil Within

The Evil Within is gory in nearly every facet of its production. Everything, from the horrifically violent deaths of the monsters and protagonist Sebastian to the designs of the monsters themselves, is meant to repulse and disturb.

This game doesn't waste any time, as the opening moments have you escaping from being butchered alive and falling into a vat of blood and body parts, and from there the blood never stops spilling. Every creature is a grotesque and bloody monstrosity, as are the ways in which they kill you. How you dish out damage is equally gory; headshots are both sickening and immensely satisfying in the way they explode.

In many ways Shinji Mikami has topped anything he has done in the Resident Evil series with The Evil Within, at least in terms of the amount of gore. It is not only one of the goriest games of last year, but of all time.
