Psychonauts, despite its critical reception, was never a very popular game, struggling to find its audience. Nevertheless, it gradually developed in appreciation over the years, eventually solidifying its status as a cult classic.
That said, the cover really shouldn't be blamed for the disappointing sales even slightly - it's colourful and exciting, perfectly replicating the personality of the game, subtly emphasising minor characters and major themes without cluttering the available space, the protagonist remaining central within the image always, the various shades of green inviting closer inspection.
Honestly, how could anyone not pick this thing up, at least for a closer inspection?
