3 Things Square-Enix Just Did To Save Final Fantasy

2. They're Still Totally Making FFXIII Sequels, But Versus XIII Is Actually Coming Out

It's just got some news digs. Final Fantasy Versus XIII--in a sort of predicted twist of fate--is now called Final Fantasy XV and is actually a game that we'll get to play. As excited as I was, the switch was definitely reported on way earlier than this year's E3 and it's just further evidence that nothing can stay a secret anymore. Nevertheless, the general feeling was that FFvXIII had disappeared into the ether never to be seen or heard from again even with the faint, desperate rumors of a re-branding to FFXV. Fortunately, this turned out to be true: FFXV is coming to PS4 and Xbox One and I hope they do a really sweet special bundle for it with a shiny black PS4 with red accents and keychain or letter opener or something. Final Fantasy XV's narrative supposedly takes place in the mythology established by Final Fantasy XIII as originally intended, but who knows what was changed in its jump from part of the perhaps overly ambitious Fabula Nova Crystallis project to full-fledged numbered Final Fantasy game. Will we see more fal'Cie and l'Cie? What about eidolons that turn into appropriately themed vehicles? Judging from the trailers, the game seems to have FFXIII's same mix of modernity and magic. I always thought it had sort of a Hamlet vibe, but that's just something weird my stupid brain came up with. Also, announced alongside this game was, unsurprisingly, Kingdom Hearts III's development. We already knew the games were tied together, but seeing them announced side-by-side was sort of sublime. It was like a million voices cried out in joy simultaneously. It was like being a kid at Christmas again. It's a little harder being a jaded 20-something with Kingdom Hearts III waiting on the horizon.
