3 Things Square-Enix Just Did To Save Final Fantasy

1. They Didn't Make Final Fantasy XV Portable

I'll admit this sounded like a pretty good idea at the time, but the more I thought about it the less sense it made. Ever since Final Fantasy VII, Square-Enix seemed to have a desire to push what consoles were capable of. They were out in the front of FMV cutscenes and highly detailed 3D graphics so why would they want to limit themselves to mobile hardware for a main series release? Final Fantasy XIII had faults, but looking really damn good wasn't one of them. I realize now I was injecting a little too much of myself and my desires into the mix. I'm a sucker for the 16-bit era and it's stylized, cartoony feel that the NES hardware couldn't quite capture. Most people get the warm and fuzzies when they see the 8-bit Mario or Link sprites they grew up with, but I didn't grow up with the 8-bit era. The first console I got was a Super Nintendo because my parents were not all-in on the whole video games thing and finally relented when the SNES hit. When I see X tearing through Chill Penguins stage or Mario flying through the air with a cape, that's my childhood reference. I only discovered the great original Nintendo games later (fun fact: I didn't even know Super Mario Bros. 3 was released on the NES first until I was a freshman in high school). I thought of how much I loved all of the Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS Final Fantasy re-releases/updates and said to myself: "how amazing would a Nintendo 3DS Final Fantasy title would look?" I still think the answer is "absolutely incredible," but it was never truly in the cards. I also apparently overestimated the damage that Square-Enix had wrought on themselves. I thought it was so terrible that the public may have given up on high-profile Final Fantasy projects and would only accept a lower key release. Looks like I was dead wrong about that. Of course, there's also the possibility of a Final Fantasy XV spin-off. Here's hoping for Final Fantasy Versus XV 3DS. Am I joking? I have no idea.
