30 Best Video Games Of All Time

1. The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Zelda Breath Of The Wild
Nintendo

Combining everything the gaming industry is all about, should be and represents as a medium, Nintendo's latest Legend of Zelda is one of the most playable, seamlessly rewarding and naturally explorative games ever made.

Everything from the immaculate set of moves Link has, to the genuine sense of discovery behind every last underground puzzle shrine, the meta-narrative of learning how to be 'The Hero of Hyrule' and becoming a better fighter, cook, survivor and explorer as a player is an immersive loop that occasionally transcends gaming itself.

There are no lists of collectibles to tick off, no microtransactions, empty story points, "+0.5% damage" buffs or arbitrary "Go find the switch/key for this locked door!" pop-ups. Breath of the Wild is everything we talk about when we discuss why gaming matters as an artform: It's a perfect way to escape into another realm of possibility, playing perfectly, looking gorgeous and rewarding you in tow.

Going forward there's every chance Nintendo will find yet another way to build on such a phenomenal game, but as a sequel to all of Zeldas' past and a reset button pushed on how open-world games are designed, this is a landmark achievement.
