16. Doom Is Unveiled... And It Looks Terrific

Bethesda kicked their press conference off in style by introducing the quasi-reboot of Doom. While it mostly appears to be business as usual for the series, with dingy, grotty environments, cacodemons and big effing guns, one surprising addition to the gorgeous visual palette was the amount of gore. Doom is going to be one of the most brutally violent games of the next few years, priding itself on grotesque, elaborate executions the player can perform on enemies. That's just the single-player, though: there's an expansive multiplayer suite as well as Doom SnapMap, an intuitive level editor which allows players to create their own maps and even edit the game logic to make new modes of play, and then share it instantly. It's not out until spring next year, sadly, but it's shaping up to be a fine evolution of the series indeed.
