4 Doctor Who Games That Just Didn't Work (And 4 That Did)

2. The Adventure Games (PC)

One of the BBC's most recent, and arguably thus far most successful, forays into the digital universe came in the form of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games which were released - for free, no less (at least for license fee paying UK residents, anyway) - at varying intervals via the show's official website between June 2010 and October 2011. These standalone episodic ventures were a fresh of breath air for both avid gamers and new players alike and the first episode, which went all out by taking players on a journey to the City of the Daleks, was no doubt responsible for layering the assumption that the aforementioned Nintendo games were going to follow suit that winter with the same sort of ambition and substance as these free supplements. Unfortunately, as fans now know, this wasn't the case, but they still had the Adventure Games to occupy their zest for interactive adventure and, what's more, they were free to play as well, so fans didn't really have the heart to complain... right? Wrong! While the overall concept of the Adventure Games was impressively immersive from the outset (and the overall quality of the storytelling grew progressively more so as the series developed - hats off to the writing department, there!), they were, at their bug-ridden core, games of adventure and stealth - something which proved to particularly frustrating given the clunky graphics which more often than not only hindered your ability to outrun the respective ensuing adversary. Still, it's important to remember that they were free, and, while they weren't perfect (it's unlikely that they'll ever achieve a Doctor Who game that is, what with the conflicting opinions on what one should be), the developers made the best use of the limited resources they had readily available and that's another testament to their ongoing dedication to create a Doctor Who game which fans and gaming enthusiasts alike take to their hearts. Will they ever get there? Well, The Adventure Games show that Doctor Who as a game certainly has potential, but whether that can be developed into anything more - for the foreseeable future, at least - remains to be seen.
