Final Fantasy VI
Widely considered to be the best entry in the series (and one of the best games of all time) by purists, Final Fantasy VI is an epic of gargantuan proportions, featuring fourteen playable characters and an almost endless array of content. Initially focusing on an enigmatic magical girl named Terra who becomes an object of interest to a world conquering empire and the faction that opposes them, the emphasis eventually shifts to former empire general Celes when one of her former 'comrades', Kefka, acquires godlike power and destroys the world, using the ruins as his own personal playground.
Aria Di Mezzo Caraterre This composition comes from the game's famous opera scene, which is one of the most iconic and beautiful sequences in gaming history, in no short part due to this simply wonderful musical accompaniment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltoc0XD5waI
Terra's Theme Doubling as a world map theme and the character theme of the game's initial protagonist, this track succeeds at being not only tranquil and uplifting, but also non-irksome, unlike other repetitive world map themes from the series. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6t_uyg_pF8
Dancing Mad Running at over seventeen minutes long, this is the longest track ever to feature in a Final Fantasy game, and is often split into two (or even three). Serving as an accompaniment to the final battle with Kefka, it is as bizarre as he is, being insane, terrifying and brilliant in equal measure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbXVNKtmWnc
Locke's Theme Arguably serving as the game's male lead, Locke is a thief (ahem, treasure hunter) with honourable intentions. Given his status as a strong leader, this piece suits him perfectly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joNmYWYFZQg
Forever Rachel One of the more emotional moments of the game concerns Rachel, Locke's former love who was killed by an incident he caused. This sad but lovely track plays when he is able to utilise magic to briefly revive her, only to be told to move on with his life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_aX6I0xLbo
