5 Reasons Why Games Should Not Be Like Films

4. All The Best Bits Are Out of Your Hands!

We play games because we want to play games, not watch animation rendered in woeful graphics. Current generation game engines look great right?! Of course, but not compared to a frickin' animated movie they do not even compare. So why do I want to spend 2 hours watching Old Ass Snake chat to Big Deal Boss in a grave yard. It isn't compelling narrative because it can't get to the point and it isn't cinematic because a film lasts as long as this stupid conversation. The real kicker is when a game looks cooler in the cut scenes than when you are in control. A classic example is Devil May Cry 3. Yes, a bit vintage now, but there's an HD Collection so deal with it. In the cut scenes Dante surfs missiles, fights demons with their own weapons (that happen to be skewering his limbs) and has a bat shit crazy sword fight with Virgil. Grated, Dante looks pretty bad ass in the gameplay but you don't do any of those things! The fight with Virgil is actually an exercise in dodging not standing toe to toe like some sort of demonic Jake LaMotta. I want to be the guy who pulls off the coolest moves with my thumb dexterity, not the guy that makes characters look "ok I guess." Click "next" below to read the next entry...
