5 Reasons Why Games Should Not Be Like Films

3. Random Events Aren't Random The Second Time! You know what I hate? When I'm climbing up the side of a shaky looking surface and suddenly my hand or foot hold breaks and I think I'm gunna die right.....but then I don't. The first time this happened I was like "woah, that was crazy, I thought that was the same as these other luminous yellow hand holds that are protruding from this old Italian villa.....but it turns out.....it wasn't." After the 3rd Uncharted game full of such events...lets just say the excitement had worn off. See, I'm happy with the contrived game design that allows platforming, it's not realistic but it is a game, no one with tits that big can grab a ladder while falling and chest plant into a wall without screaming bloody murder. Realism isn't what games are about. The problem is that cinematic games are so bloody realistic and blockbustery that they try and be like a movie, and look all real. Except, the gamer doesn't know what he can and can't climb up so, hand holds still need to light up with a neon sign....but now you don't know which is safe or not. However unexpected these things are, they never kill you, unless you are completely brain dead and don't actually jump on when your hand hold crumbles. War games are the same, you get these cool war movie moments where a wall will blow out into your face with no warning. Unless of course, you finished the ten minute campaign and are replaying in some sad hope to make the game value for money, then you know it is coming and it just slows you down.
