2. A Lack Of Pretention
Now say what you will about Tarantino as a man, but his work never insists upon itself. It is never tossed out there to win 5 awards and get him recognition in serious film circles. Far from it in fact, because Tarantino remains one of the most personally informed film-makers of all time. He makes a movie that not only entertains and engages you on the surface, but which also appeals on numerous other levels - and primarily to the same sort of film fan as Tarantino himself. Rather than showing off pretentiously that he has the ability to make something that critics will fall over themselves to praise, Tarantino makes something
full of barely noticeable references to the films that informed his love of the medium, but which is fundamentally entertaining throughout. Suda 51 does just that and more: he makes you want to beat his games by using engaging characters and dialogue, and he makes something worthy of thinking about, without ever being insistent. Not many games can do both, sadly it usually comes down to being either overly serious or too goofy in the modern market.
