3. Super Mario RPG
A Mario spin-off that seemed almost out of nowhere, Super Mario RPG proved that even the world's favorite mustachioed plumber could take his stake in turn-based combat. Combining familiar Mario characters with new original ones and a large world with a main baddie not at all who you'd expect leads to a surprisingly fun game that for some reason has yet to have a follow up. All the battle mechanics that the game has are all twists on familiar elements of Mario games, i.e. Jump Attacks, Fireballs, etc. In the last few years there has been so many additions to the Mario franchise that they have taken to re-releasing New Super Mario Brothers which was just a reboot of the original series anyway; where's the new concepts? As large as the game was it could take full advantage of the Wii U to expand on what is already there. Add in new and familiar foes and it would definitely attract new and old fans alike. The landscape is littered with large quantities of RPGs now that they sometimes have a tendency to blend together. The Elder Scrolls series set a standard on Action RPGs that while great in its own way, has taken away from the depth a strategy that turn based games can offer.
