2. Earthbound
Earthbound is one of the titles that comes to mind when one thinks of a cult-classic. Unique and inventive even in the already varied RPG list for the SNES, it unfortunately did not sell as well as its competition. However this does little to detract from the game's fun and humorous take on the genre with its pseudo-US setting and unlikely hero Ness. who with his friend Pokey, were awakened by a falling meteorite and decided to see what had happened.Through encounters with an eclectic cast of characters and an alien warning, Ness and his friends unwittingly become the saviors of the world. One of the aspects that set Earthbound lacking the overworld style map employed by most RPGs of the time; instead it used a single seamless world that flowed together and lacked obvious boundaries between various towns. It also lacked the familiar random battles, using the now oft employed on screen enemies that instigate battles when contacted. Being a Nintendo game it can only be assumed that a next-gen sequel would appear on the Wii U, which would definitely add to this quirky title. Like the other titles on this list, the expanded memory and processing power would serve to enrich the games world and you can only guess as to how the touch screen controller could be implemented into the games mechanics; most interestingly the battles, the touch screen could be used to pull of special maneuvers or even to give commands to the other characters. Adding a possible online co-op mode would be something that would help the game really pop with players as well, teaming up for special multiplayer only missions and maps that unlock hidden items in the main game. With the right minds behind it a sequel could be one of the best games released on the new consoles.
