5 Things The Destiny Beta Is Doing Very Right

5. The Set Up And Plot-line

The wider scope of Destiny's plot-line is still a closely guarded secret within Bungie and quite rightly so, but the beta does give you a tantalising taster of what the plot will involve. From the absolutely stunning opening cinematic which has humans venturing to Mars and discovering The Traveler, to the in engine cut scene showing your character receiving instructions from The Speaker, an anonymous being who speaks for The Traveler and sounds remarkably like Bill Nighy. So the plot we're given goes; a giant construct known as The Traveler is found on Mars and a golden age of technology ignites. The Traveler shares its technology and humanity prospers, terraforming inhospitable planets, expanding humanity around the galaxy and even trebling the average human's lifespan. But as with all tales of prosperity, The Collapse (as it is known in game) is inevitable and a malicious entity known as The Darkness destroys humanity's civilisation, scattering the population and leaving former strongholds like Earth in complete ruin. Skip ahead several centuries and this is where we start the game, as a long dead corpse, resurrected by your plucky little Ghost companion (more on him later) and ready to kick ass across the galaxy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnjYBWl5uD8 What is most appealing about the plot line and its presentation so far is that it appears that Bungie have engineered it to be presented in a non-linear format like other RPGs. While there are cutscenes, most of the major plot points are delivered by in level dialogue from your Ghost and there is a strong suspicion that most of the information you will find about The Traveler and The Darkness will be presented as lore, rather than in your face cutscenes. Obviously we won't find this out until the full game lands in September, but so far Bungie are making the right noises around the story and its presentation.
