28. The Walking Dead
Platforms: PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360
Release Date: 24 April, 2012 Traditional adventure games seemed like a dying breed at the beginning of the generation. Point and click games like The Secret of Monkey Island had their heyday in the early 90s. But Telltale Games have continued to make adventure games like Back to the Future and Sam & Max. Their greatest game so far is unarguably The Walking Dead. The game is all about the story and the characters that you control and encounter rather than action sequences. By interaction with everything in the environment and making decisions, often under pressure, you determine how the game plays out. The excellent plot plays out and the depressing conclusions drawn from your choices manifest themselves, leaving you with a deep appreciation of the story that you have just been told.
27. Wipeout HD
Platforms: PlayStation 3
Release Date: 25 September, 2008 The Wipeout series has been a stalwart of the PlayStation line up for over 10 years now and it was almost inevitable that we would see another instalment at some point in the PlayStation 3s lifetime. It came in 2009 and didnt disappoint. The developers took a if it aint broke, dont fix it approach to Wipeout HD. A wide variety of tracks and vehicles was expected and duly delivered but what impressed most with the title was fabulous graphics and high detail of models and landscapes. The Zone game mode was also highly praised as it was brought over from Wipeout Fusion, giving players more diversity in how to play. The final product was a well-made game with a stonking soundtrack at a great price.
26. Red Dead Redemption
Platforms: PlayStation 3 /
Xbox 360
Release Date: 21 May, 2010 On the face of it Red Dead Redemption looks like a Grand Theft Auto game set in the Old West. In many ways it is. It borrows many conventions from GTA including the open world environment, the ability to progress through the main game at a chosen pace and the large number of additional activities. However Red Dead Redemption is so much more. A few gameplay changes, such as the Dead Eye slow motion gun fighting system, help to distinguish it as its own game. The most important changes to Redemption though are its morality system and engrossing game world. Your base your actions on moral decisions, which is only possible because the game makes you care about the world that you inhabit.
