6 Final Fantasy Sequels That You Didn't Know Existed

5. Before Crisis & Last Order: Final Fantasy VII

The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII was a huge cause for celebration when it was first announced. Fans eagerly anticipated the opportunity to revisit the world of one of the series' most beloved titles through Advent Children, Dirge Of Cerberus, and Crisis Core, the former two serving as sequels and the latter as a prequel to the original narrative.

Each of three was successful to a degree, though none could live up to the impossibly high standards of the original game and it doesn't seem as if there are any plans to work them into its upcoming remake.

There were two other elements of the compilation that have been largely forgotten by comparison. The first of these was Before Crisis, an episodic prequel focusing on the Turks. Highly advanced for a mobile game of the time, it was delivered to Japanese players in twenty four parts over two years. A Western release was mooted but never actually came to fruition, ostensibly because the majority of mid-noughties phones were not up to the task of running it.

The second was Last Order, a short anime that revisited two of Final Fantasy VII's major set-pieces, interspersed with new narration from Tseng. Though hidden away as a special feature on certain versions of Advent Children, it was never dubbed into English as the feature film was and many may have overlooked it as a result.

Given that neither title had much impact on the overarching Compilation narrative (Before Crisis was mostly a standalone story), missing them was no big deal. Their combined soundtrack is certainly worth visiting, however...
