6 Final Fantasy Sequels That You Didn't Know Existed
4. Dirge Of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII - Lost Episode
As a third person shooter geared around the popular character of Vincent Valentine, Dirge Of Cerberus sounded excellent on paper. Ultimately the switch in genre from the role playing games that have always been their bread and butter took Square Enix well out of their comfort zone, however, and the title became by far the most poorly received of the aforementioned three main elements of the Compilation Of Final Fantasy VII.
The Japanese edition of the game was vastly different to the one that Western audiences were eventually subjected to, with a reduction in difficulty and the removal of a multiplayer mode amongst the extensive modifications that were made between market releases. These had little impact as the game remained clunky, but despite its flaws it has had something of an impact on the wider series, as subsequent games have seen their battle systems become much more action and reaction-based rather than strategic.
An extension to Dirge Of Cerberus slipped under the radar in 2006 in the form of Lost Episode. A mobile interquel that depicted what happened to Vincent between two of the scenarios depicted in the game, it was the sort of thing that would crop up as downloadable content (DLC) in a contemporary title, akin to Episodes Gladiolus, Prompto and the upcoming Episode Ignis in Final Fantasy XV.
