6 Final Fantasy Sequels That You Didn't Know Existed

3. Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-

Final Fantasy VII Before Crisis
Square Enix

The story of Final Fantasy IV was left untouched for almost seventeen years, though it was subject to four remakes on four different consoles. Two of these were enhanced remakes, with the Game Boy Advance edition adding post-game dungeons and party swapping and the Nintendo DS version rebuilding the game from the ground up in 3D and adding a number of new features.

2008 saw Square Enix catch the sequel bug and release The After Years, an episodic game originally released on phones before it made its way to other platforms. Revisiting most of the surviving cast, it was pointless yet harmless enough.

2011's The Complete Collection brought the two together for the first time with the PSP as the chosen medium. Not content to leave things as they were, Square Enix decided that an interquel was needed to bridge the two.

Never released outside of this collection (somewhat shockingly given how the original has now been remade on seven different platforms and The After Years has seen a release on six), Interlude is exactly what it says on the tin. Set one year after Final Fantasy IV's conclusion but sixteen years prior the start of The After Years, it can be beaten in little over an hour. Though fine as a palate cleanser, it brings almost nothing to the table and nothing is missed by being unaware of its existence.
