6 More Video Game Endings That Were Profoundly Insulting
4. Far Cry 5
Few games flit back and forth between fan adoration and animosity like the Far Cry series. Fry Cry 4 picked up a fair bit of flak but it was nothing compared to the fury felt across the internet by a significant portion of Far Cry 5 players upon completion of the game.
The bulk of Far Cry 5 sees the player undoing an armageddon cult led by charismatic leader Joseph Seed. Then, as the end of the game finally wraps around and we confront Seed with our handcuffs ready to go, the player is left with one of two choices: Arrest Seed, or else just walk away. These are the two options that decide the outcome of the game, rather than any other player actions up to that point.
If you chose to do nothing, (for no reason, you literally have been hunting this total arsewipe all game) you and your companions simply get into a car and begin driving away. Then a song comes on the radio that Seed used to brainwash the player earlier in the game. A red mist begins to fog your vision and the game cuts to credits. Ambiguity can make for a good ending, but in this case it definitely doesn’t. The whole thing just smacks of having a ‘bad ending’ option if for no reason you decided not to arrest Seed. So, how about the other option?
If you do arrest Seed, some nukes go off. Nothing to do with Seed by the way, they just happen to go off after you arrest him. This type of ‘unpredictablity’ makes for the most tedious type of ‘twist’ in narrative construction.
Ultimately, no matter what ending you chose, there is no satisfying conclusion to Far Cry 5, and it robs the entire game of any possible replay value as it makes every action until that point feel entirely pointless.
