6 More Video Game Endings That Were Profoundly Insulting
3. Outlast
Killing the main character at the end of a game is always a risky move, and it almost never pays justifiable dividends. For it to work effectively, the death needs to serve some purpose to the narrative or offer some kind of thought provoking point or perspective. Outlast, excellent survival horror game that it is, ends in a way that does neither of these.
The game focuses on freelance investigative journalist Miles Upshur’s exploration of remote psychiatric hospital Mount Massive Asylum. After spending countless hours hiding in lockers and skulking around homicidal maniacs throughout the asylum you ultimately become possessed by the Walrider, a biotechnological nanite entity. Don’t worry though, it only lasts for about 30 seconds as just before you can finally escape the hospital you encounter the military who are storming the place, and shoot you dead instantly.
It feels a little too much like the developers didn’t know how to conclude a horror game without having everything ‘go wrong’ at the last moment. Unfortunately, rather than feeling shocking, it feels more awkwardly thrown together and random then anything else.
The Whistleblower DLC had something more closely resembling a fitting ending, but locking a better ending behind DLC doesn’t count; we shouldn’t have to pay extra to get a satisfying conclusion to a game’s story.
