5. Internet Requirement
This is probably one of the most hotly debated issues surrounding the Xbox One. This is also something that Microsoft has issued contradictory statements about on several occasions, leading to a wide web of confusion and outrage. While it wasn't heavily mentioned during the reveal, it continues to make the rounds of the Internet as gamers try to sort out exactly what they can expect from the Xbox One. Even before the reveal, details surfaced that Xbox One would require an always-on Internet connection in order to function. In the days following the reveal, Microsoft executives have spoken out to try and dampen these rumors, saying that the Xbox One doesn't require this type of connection. And I guess technically it doesn't, although the statement that Xbox One will be required to go online at least once every 24 hours and every time the player installs a game seems to contradict that. In addition, developers can choose to use the power of the cloud to power games, which would also require a connection. This would affect a large number of gamers, especially those who live in rural areas where Internet connections are either spotty or non-existent. And if your internet goes down for a long enough period of time, you may not even be able to watch live TV or blu-ray discs. This could be a bad move on Microsoft's part, and something they need to clarify at E3, if only for peace of mind for the gamer demographic.
