6 Video Game Enemies Who Turned Into Allies

Another sibling-come-mortal-enemy, Vergil is the twin brother of Dante, the Devil May Cry series’ primary protagonist. Having been separated as children, Vergil chooses to embrace his demon side in opposition to Dante’s association with humans, but this never exactly turns out well for him.

In the first game, though this is not obvious at the time, Vergil appears as the secondary antagonist, Nelo Angelo, having been used as a host for a demon much like Lady and Trish.

Believing Vergil dead, Dante eventually defeats this demon — or so we thought. Turns out, all he did was free him from the demon’s control, same as his two friends.

Devil May Cry 5 sees Vergil return, though again not as you would first expect. Soul split between the human V, one of three playable characters, and demon Urizen, the narrative’s primary antagonist and instigator, Vergil is only revealed to be himself after Urizen is — you guessed it — defeated and his soul put back together.

In typical fashion, the stubborn Vergil doesn’t become an ally right away, having regained control of his demon sword Yamato and remaining intent on destroying the world. Bummer. It takes Nero bashing both his dad and his uncle around to get the two brothers to stop fighting, but clearly his time as a human had an influence, because Vergil ends the story fighting side by side with Dante in hell, as brothers and allies.

Spare the Spardas a thought the next time you’re fighting with your family. Even though they end up on the same side, their family drama is definitely worse.
