7 Beloved Video Game Franchises That Are Stuck In A Rut

2. Resident Evil

The Resident Evil series has undergone a T-Virus esque transformation over the past two decades. It started life on the original Playstation as a case study in survival horror, where supplies were scarce and the story was engrossing. Cut forward to Resident Evil 6 - although the use of the 6 is a bit misleading when there have been closer to 30 titles - and where is that same atmosphere? Resident Evil is no longer a horror game. It has its moments where you will be jump scared but today's Resident Evil is an action game that is more Michael Bay than George Romero. The game's all about big guns, boss battles and ridiculous plot twists. It has lost its way and the most frustrating thing is there is a massive gap in the market for true survival horror, something that The Evil Within more than exploited last year. The recent remastered editions of the original games are a reminder of what the game used to be. But they are re-releases and whilst they're fun, there's no innovation and no new ground. Fans want new ideas; a genuinely terrifying game with immaculate graphics - not another iteration plodding forward all zombie-like, accepting its pay check and moving on.
