7 Beloved Video Game Franchises That Are Stuck In A Rut

1. Pokémon

Pokemon Blue and Red are two of the most popular games of all time because they are timeless classics; search for any Pokemon game on Google and you'll find hundreds of suggestions on how to play it on your laptop, phone or iPad. Think about it; people still want to play a game that was made in 1996, that's how addictive they still are. Each of the following titles offered something a little bit different but even the newest titles, X & Y, are fundamentally the same game. This is Nintendo's problem; they find a highly popular, addictive formula and work it into the ground without really testing themselves, exploring their capabilities. Pokemon puts you in the shoes of a young trainer who trains and battles ancient beasts. It's epic but the games don't feel it. A Pokemon game in the modern day should be huge and loud and ambitious, not tucked away on a handheld console with a tiny screen. We want to see huge dragons and legendary birds, arrive out of nowhere in a first person, open world game. Think Skyrim except the world is teeming with Pokemon, where every town has NPCs with immersive quests and dialogue. That is what Pokemon could, and what it more than should be by now.
