7 Censored Video Games That Went Way Too Far

4. Custer’s Revenge

Severely messed up stuff has been around in games since the genesis of gaming. One of the earliest censored games was Custer’s Revenge, a 1982 game released for the Atari by Mystique.

The gameplay revolves around General Custer (completely naked aside from a cavalry hat, boots and bandana) dodging arrows and moving across the screen. Complete with a visible erection, Custer’s aim is to reach Native American woman tied to a pole and have sex with her.

Naturally the game inspired an enormous wave of controversy and criticism. Women’s groups in particular criticised the game’s ambiguous depiction of sex between Custer and a tied up woman, which could understandably be interpreted as sexual assault. The video game creators insisted the sex depicted was entirely consensual.

Ultimately, the game was withdrawn from circulation, and then re-released with heavy alterations under the title of General Retreat.
