5. Resident Evil (Gamecube)
One of the daddies of survival horror, Resident Evil has long since moved out of the slow paced scary exploration and into more action flavoured territory pioneered by Resi 4. All well and good, but some of us happen to miss the Resident Evils of old. And of them, none were better than Capcom's remake of the first, for the Gamecube. Completely rebuilt with state of the art graphics, re-recorded dialogue, and new gameplay elements, REmake (as it's known) was a far cry from the much-loved but often derided Playstation original. Gone were the clunky environments and laughable dubbing, replaced with a new game engine and pre-rendered backgrounds that gave things a truly cinematic feel. It's one of the few games that can still make your jaw drop ten years on. Not only does it still look amazing, but it remains as terrifying as it was back in 2002. The mansion is truly eerie, and there's nothing quite like the panic you feel when you hear a crimson head sprinting down a corridor at you. With the action-packed Resi 6 right around the corner, we could do with a remake of, er, REmake to remind us of what survival horror really is.
