Growing up with Assassin's Creed's various plot machinations over the years has gone from "Wow, that.is.incredible", to "what... the hell are they doing??"

Following Assassin's Creed 3, like Gears of War, a lead creative force had left the project. That man was Patrice Desilets, and though he rounded off AC 3 - saying it was always planned as a "trilogy" - the reality was money speaking a lot louder than artistic integrity.

Thus, the show must go on, and Desmond's story - despite the character being killed at the end of 3 - was dragged out across Black Flag, with Des' corpse playing a key role.

From there though, we hit the dark times of Assassin's Creed Unity, and after AC Origins and Odyssey started becoming more overblown with resurrections and time-bending "anything goes" storytelling, it was AC Valhalla that finally brought Desmond back.

Appearing almost 8 years later as "The Reader", somewhat trapped in between realities, it turns out Desmond had become an entity that literally reads the strands of time itself, to determine a future that's best for humanity.

Assassin's Creed has been in full-on Kingdom Hearts/anime territory since an immortalising staff allowed Odyssey's Kassandra or Alexios to emerge in the modern day, so who knows where things go from here.
